Chandelier Sizing Guide: Match Fixture to Room and Table

Chandelier size is judged before the light is switched on: proportion is what a room reads first. Two rules cover most decisions. For open rooms, add the room's length and width in feet — that sum, read in inches, is the classic diameter guide (a 12 x 14 ft room points to a roughly 26-inch fixture; in metric, diameter in cm ≈ 8.3 x the length-plus-width sum in metres). Over a dining table, the table — not the room — sets the width: roughly half to two-thirds of the table width, hung 76-91 cm above the top. • Visual weight beats measured width. An airy brass frame of 90 cm reads lighter than a solid drum shade of 70 cm. When in doubt between two sizes over a table, the larger usually anchors better — undersized chandeliers are the most common regret.
• Dim it, then size it. A correctly proportioned chandelier over a table needs dimming down to 5-10% for dining; plan the driver and wall control together so brightness never argues with proportion.
• Weight and mounting come first. Confirm the ceiling box rating before falling for a heavy piece — anything beyond roughly 23 kg (50 lb) needs a rated box or a structural fix, and tall foyers need a plan for relamping.
• One statement per room. Where the chandelier is the hero, keep the surrounding recessed layer quiet; two competing focal points shrink a room faster than a small fixture ever will.
• Scale for the second view. In foyers and stairwells, check the fixture from upstairs and from the approach door — the sightlines, not the floor plan, decide the final size.
